Review: ILIA ‘Balmy Nights’ lip exfoliator

Hello everyone! I’m back with a super exciting review of a lip exfoliator…in stick form! YES YES YES THE CHOIR OF TOMBOY PRINCESS ANGELS IS SINGING FROM ABOVE.

No more messing around with your fingers in a tub of glorified sugar. Here comes the real deal!

Ingredients: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil*, Volcanic Stone Powder, Jojoba Seed Meal*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Beeswax (Cera Alba)*, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit*, Titanium Dioxide, Tocopherol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil. *Certified Organic (source:

What it promises (from the official ILIA website):

~ organic ingredients blended with tiny granules of volcanic stone powder

~ gently exfoliate the lips leaving a smooth, kissable surface

What it delivers:

I looked at the ingredient list and am happy that there isn’t any ingredient I couldn’t pronounce! I’m very wary of what I put on my skin since I have sensitive skin so I’m glad that this product is organic.

And guess what – VOLCANIC STONE POWDER. Yea, I like to imagine I’m in Hawaii when I use this.

I swipe this on my lips and the granules gently exfoliate. I wipe the excess residue away et voila! wonderfully soft, flake-free lips. This product doesn’t dry out my lips like other lip exfoliators I’ve tried (Lush, sugar & EVOO). It leaves my lips feeling really smooth and looking plump. I especially appreciate that I can control the area I exfoliate and visibly see the flakes of dead skin coming off!

Price point:

I bought this little gem from wishlist boutique in Kits (other mentions here and here). It retails at CAD$26 (before taxes) so yes, it’s pricey! I have been using this product as part of my lip prep before putting on bold lip colors and my lipstick always looks #flawless.

Overall rating: 5/5 active volcanoes

~update on March 15, 2015 ~

After half a year of using this, I will now rate it a B.

Thoughts: I am giving this product 5 active volcanoes because why not. It’s a lip exfoliator. Perfect for lip prep for fall’s bold lip colors. and it has fantastical volcanic stone powder.

What kind of lip exfoliators have you tried?

Stay true xo

  1. I was eyeing it earlier on Love Lula and will have to order it now. Ingredients have always been a source of satisfaction in all Ilia products.
