Hello all and welcome to my first post of Style Muse – a new series where I draw upon multimedia (movies, tv shows, books) and people (celebrities, friends, fashionable strangers) for fashion inspiration!
My first post is on the women of Gotham – a new TV show that started airing last week. This week’s Episode 2 was titled ‘Selina Kyle’ so I thought it would be appropriate to look at the outfits of the kooky characters in Gotham and draw inspiration from them for daily styling.
Fish Mooney is a Gotham power player/bar owner/crimelord.
I love the glamorous, sexy and confident style of Fish Mooney in the show and decided to put together an outfit inspired by her amazing sequin gold dress in the second episode.
Color palette: Gold, Black and Red (not for the faint of heart!)
A gold sequin top paired with basic black jeans can take the place of a gold sequin dress for a more casual vibe. Mooney has red highlights in her hair but a red clutch works just as well as a highlight to an otherwise gold/black dominant outfit. Keep it simple with gold hoops and gold shoes (I love these quirky loafers). Top it off with gold/black nail polish and smoky eyes. You can channel Fish Mooney the next time you hit the dance floor.
Gertrude Kapelput is the quirky, slightly off-kilter mother of Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin).
I initially overlooked this character but when I started writing this post, I realized that Kapelput’s style was worth a second look. I created a more wearable look based on Kapelput’s scary-grandma style.
Color palette: Pastel pink, pastel green, light grey (perfect for spring!)
Kapelput wears a frilly dress that looks Gothic-retro. Replace the scary grandma dress with a flower printed sweater and grey denim. The most important part of the outfit is the amount of jewelry Kapelput wears. She sports silver jewelry in the scene but I decided to go with gold to up the ante on the outfit. Layering a bunch of delicate jewelry creates the ‘I meant to over accessorize’ vibe. Top it off with a coral red lip and pink pumps and can you say ‘Scary but Wearable Grandma’?
Selina Kyle is Catwoman in her teen years.
Take a look at Catwoman’s budding style before her infamous leather cat suit a la Michelle Pfeiffer circa 1992.
Color palette: Black, Grey and Blonde (perfect for fall/winter or just kicking butt)
Selina Kyle definitely has a tomboy vibe with the combat boots and black leather jacket. Layer with a grey hoodie for extra warmth and pair with destroyed dark wash denim as well as leather gloves and it’s the perfect outfit for a young Catwoman (yes, I often fancy myself to be Catwoman when wearing my black leather jacket).
Selina has blonde hair but a beige backpack also works great as a highlight color in this dominant black/grey palette. The most intriguing part about Selina’s style is her makeup. Youthful pink blush and a nude pink lip adds an innocence to her look which sharply contrasts with her rough-and-tough outfit.
p.s. Catwoman was always my favorite character in Batman world because of her ambiguous morality and kick-assery.
Which of the three looks is your favorite?
Stay true xo
