Hair and Now: October 2014

Some of you may know that I’ve been trying to grow my hair out since last year. My last update was in the summer and today, I’m back with another exciting hair update!

I got my hair colored and cut last week by the always inspiring Beth Lugtu, owner and artistic director of Textura Salon in Kitsilano. I’ve been seeing Beth for a little over 2 years now…she always takes so much time and care when doing my hair and I feel really special and pampered whenever I get my hair done.

Here is a ‘before’ shot of my ‘do:

This is my natural hair texture – slightly wavy. I have very thick and coarse hair. My natural hair color is dark brown.

The Process

When I sat in the chair, Beth conducted a very thorough color consultation. I came in this time knowing I wanted to get my hair dyed and was playing around with many different colors in my head (brown? orange? blue? purple?) Beth patiently listened to me and came up with this beautiful caramel ombré. I trust Beth 100% when it comes to my hair so I sat back and enjoyed the ride!

Beth meticulously hand-painted my hair (balayage). This took a good 45 minutes to an hour as I have very thick hair! After waiting for 10 -15 minutes for the dye to work its magic, she washed it out and sealed the hair with a glaze. According to Beth, this makes the hair look more natural as it doesn’t look ‘freshly-done’.

Next up was blowdrying (with heat protectant of course) which took half an hour (I got thick hair, people!) . Then, Beth did some work cutting my hair – she uses a special technique to thin out my hair but maintain the shape and texture. She then styled it with a 1.25 inch curling iron et voilà!

Beth and I

I REALLY love my hair like this. I couldn’t stop looking at myself in the mirror when I got home that day…I love the loose curls, the caramel ombré , the length, everything!  I feel very ‘me’ with this hair. 🙂 Beth has an uncanny knack to nail down what someone’s personality is like and help them express it through their hair.

I’m excited to watch my hair grow even longer and am already planning to do more things with my hair the next time I come in – perhaps I will get permanent curls? perhaps more color? Who knows what the future will hold…. 🙂

stay true xo

  1. You look stunning girl!!! Absolutely gorgeous with your new hair!! Nothing better than walking out the salon “satisfied” with your new hair do, right? (It doesn’t happen too often for me lol)

    • Awww! Thanks! I’m still trying to figure out how to style it – I don’t like using hot tools on my hair too much so I might just end up getting a perm next time 🙂
