Today’s hump day post calls for a picture of Camel, my partner’s long-lost now-found-again-in-the-attic soft toy in the form of (you guessed it) a camel.
Camel is holding an item that will be up for a product review on Friday. For today, I decided to complete the Makeup Story Tag via A Casual Beauty. Here we go!
- How old were you when you started wearing makeup?
My first time wearing makeup was at 16 years old in high school. I wore an Estee Lauder mascara to school one day (I don’t remember whose mascara it was. I certainly did not buy it!) I got compliments from my friends. For some odd reason, I decided to deny that I was wearing makeup but my best friend knew better 🙂
- How did you get into makeup?
Last year, my youngest sister got me into watching makeup tutorials and other beauty Youtube videos (holla missglamorazzi!). I started to watch Youtube videos as a way to relate to her and try to understand her interest in makeup. We live far away from one another so it was a way for me to feel connected to her and her interests. Little did I know that I would get hooked!
- What are some of your favorite brands?
I really like NARS for lips. I’m a lip product junkie. Their formulas but especially their color intensity and color choice is incredible.
For eyes, I like The Balm products. I like their packaging and the fact that their eyeshadows do not irritate my eyelids.
I have sensitive skin so for my face, I prefer to use organic/natural beauty brands like ILIA.
- What does makeup mean to you?
Makeup is art to me. I am a creative person – I write, I sing, I dance (by myself), I love watching TV and movies, I love styling clothes, I love reading and analyzing….I like anything that involves me using my imagination.
Makeup is another phase in my exploration of creative endeavors. My first love will always be writing but makeup is my newest love!
- If you could only wear 4 products on your face, what would they be?
Mascara, blush, concealer and lipstick.
- What is your favorite thing about makeup?
My favorite thing about makeup is that it is so fun! It’s all about creating a look and changing myself according to what I feel that day. I love the process of putting on makeup – it’s very therapeutic. I also love the process of taking off makeup – it’s a release from the day’s activities.
- What do you think about drugstore vs. high-end makeup?
I used to be all about the drugstore because who wants to spend more money than necessary? Then, I discovered that many drugstore brands are not cruelty-free to animals. As well, many drugstore brands are on the BDS list (read more about BDS here). In addition to that, I have sensitive skin so lots of drugstore makeup formulas do not work for me.
I made the switch to high-end makeup as a consumer choice. This means I can’t hoard makeup because it is more expensive to buy one product… but it also means I do tons of research before buying anything. I also always keep my receipts!
- What is one tip you can give a beginner?
Experiment! I love experimenting with makeup and switching up my looks. Sometimes, I fancy myself a fashion/beauty chameleon – I just love all the different lip colors – bright, dark, nude and eye shadows – purple, greens, blues…BRING IT!
- What is one makeup trend you never understood?
I wouldn’t say I never understood ‘skin-whitening’ because I do understand it as a legacy of racism and colonialism that affects brown and black women and how we view our skin color. I self-identify as a woman of color and skin-whitening was a big thing growing up. I stopped doing this to my skin in my early 20s when I became cognizant of the political implications of this practice.
- What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube?
Like I said in question #2, I started watching YT videos to stay connected to my sister. I generally enjoy beauty videos but I sometimes wish there would be more YouTubers who just did their thing without trying too hard or coming across as inauthentic.
This is why I started my blog this summer. I wanted a space to be myself – a beauty lover, an avid reader, a partner, a pet owner, a foodie, a lover of fashion…I wanted a space where I could be my whole self and be accepted. 🙂
My favorite YouTubers are the ones who are authentic, funny and whole human beings. I currently love Dani from Coffee Break with Dani and Wayne Goss. 🙂 You can read this post for more YTers I follow.
On a more positive note, I think YouTube is amazing because I’ve learned so much about makeup from You Tube. The Boy says I’m addicted to makeup – he’s right! 🙂
This was such an enlightening tag to do and so much fun too (hey, that rhymed.) I tag anyone who wants to do it. If you decide to do this tag, leave me the link in the comments – I’d love to read all your tags.
stay true xo
