On Friday, I posted a review of the NARS Audacious Lipstick in ‘Fanny’. For today, I decided to share how I apply long-lasting bold lip colors.
(Disclaimer: I am not a makeup artist nor do I have any sort of professional makeup training. The only things I have to my credit are hours of makeup application research, trial-and-error and a passion for learning about makeup.
I am sharing my own process with you but if you disagree with my process or steps, rock your own! Don’t stress too much- it’s just makeup after all. 🙂 )
- Lipstick of your choice – mine is NARS Fanny
- Lip primer – BITE Beauty Lip Primer
- Lip liner – NARS Velvet Lip Liner in ‘Sangria’
- Lip brush – Quo
You can use any kind of exfoliator but I recently learned a neat trick to exfoliate using a wet Q-tip. This gets rid of flaky skin on the lips and doesn’t rub it out too harshly.
Exfoliation is key to a bold lip because it ensures a smooth surface for the color to adhere to.
I use my BITE Beauty lip primer but you can use whatever you have on hand. I like this one because it is colorless and can be used with any lip color.
Lip primers are created to allow lip colors to stick onto them which means longer lasting lip colors.
I am using a matching lip liner in NARS ‘Sangria’. I line the outside of my lips but for even longer wear, you can color in the whole lip.
Lining your lips prevent the lip color from feathering and bleeding into areas you don’t want it to. If you color in your entire lip with the liner, it also works as a primer.
I like to apply bold colors with a brush for better control. You can apply it right from the tube if you prefer.
Once you have the first layer on, blot your lips on a piece of tissue.
Optional step: You can place a piece of 1-ply tissue paper onto your lips and powder over with a tiny bit of transculent powder. This helps the longevity of the color too.
Rock the lip color!
Important step (not pictured): Put your index finger into your mouth and pull it out. Any color that transfers onto your finger means that you will not have to worry about lipstick stains on your teeth.
Do you have any tips to share when it comes to applying bold lip colors?
