Hi friends! I return today with another product review..this time, it’s a product launch that is new for Fall 2014 from ILIA (yes, we are still in fall so this is still new-ish).
What it promises (from the ILIA website) :
~ botanical-packed gentle formula for sensitive skin
~ provides light to medium coverage
~ aloe and coconut oil soothe and hydrate
~ arnica and green tea extract help calm inflammation
~ best used when applied with brush to conceal dark circles under eyes, even skin tone and reduce redness
What it delivers:
I actually don’t use this as a concealer at all! Since learning about the concealer & moisturizer trick from Wayne Goss of Youtube, I’ve started to mix my concealer with moisturizer (1 part concealer, 2 parts moisturizer) and using it all over my face for a subtle ‘no makeup-makeup’ look.
Ok, let’s start with the pros. I like the color matching of this concealer. Surprisingly, I was correctly color matched to the ‘C4 Ginseng’ shade. My natural shade is a little lighter than ‘C4 Ginseng’ but since I cut it with moisturizer, the shade is more forgiving. I like that it evens out my skin tone and adds a warmth to my face.
Another plus point is that it doesn’t break me out! I have combo skin (normal/dry in winter & oily/normal in summer). After 2 hours of use, I notice that very little oiliness in my T-zone and my cheeks are still hydrated. (I had to return my NARS Tinted Moisturizer as it made me super shiny after an hour and broke me out.)
The way I use it provides light coverage (pictured above) but if used alone or with the ILIA Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer, I imagine that it can provide medium coverage. It covers most of my redness but it definitely evens out my skin tone. If I need something extra, I dab just the concealer onto the spot.
There are 6 shades in this range. While it is better than other natural/organic makeup brands which often stop at ‘Medium complexions’, it can’t rival NARS varied color selection. To my fellow women of color, I feel your pain.
The only con is that I wouldn’t use this by itself. The formula is great but the color isn’t a match for me when I use it alone with just invisible primer underneath. It makes the spot I try to conceal darker than the rest of my face. I’ve also heard that you need to powder over it to set it in place. I can’t comment on this since I don’t use it this way. I also have to remember to shake the tube first or else I get runny concealer (yuck).
Price point: At CAD$30 for 0.5 oz, this is cheaper than the highly-coveted NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer which is CAD$35 for 0.2 oz.
Final thoughts: This gets a solid B+. It’s not quite the A student who outshines the rest and overachieves…it’s the student who tries hard, works hard and achieves a decent grade. Way to go ILIA! This product has me looking forward to summer so I can try out the ILIA tinted moisturizer.
I would definitely recommend this to folks who are looking for a more natural brand of concealer.
stay true xo
