Review: Benefit ‘They’re Real’ Lenghtening and Volumizing Mascara

Let’s talk about the famous ‘They’re Real’ mascara from Benefit today. This is a sample size I received as part of a 100-point perk from Sephora. I’ve used it for a month and here are my thoughts!

What it promises from the Sephora website:

~ a lengthening mascara that curls, volumizes, lifts, and separates lashes for an “out-to-here” look

~ specially designed brush features staggered bristles that grab close to the root, boosting length and volume beyond belief.

~ custom-domed tip uses precision bristles to lift, define, and curl even your tiniest lashes.

What it delivers:

No mascara

With Benefit’s ‘They’re Real’ mascara

I think it definitely delivers on the claims. My lashes definitely look longer and thicker.

I like the mascara brush especially the dome-shaped tip enables me to get right onto the lash line and build up volume.

Formula-wise, I like that it is able to latch itself onto even the tiniest lashes. I’m not a big fan of the clumpiness though. My eyelashes seemed to clump together rather than that separated and defined look I prefer. After a few hours of wear, my eyes felt uncomfortable and irritated. I also found it difficult to remove completely and would get raccoon eyes and stringy bits left in my eyeball. Yuck.

Price point: CAD$16 for 0.14 oz or CAD$31 for 0.3 oz

Rating: C

Final thoughts:  This mascara promises to do what it says it will do.  In my opinion however, the cons far outweight the pros. I know people who swear by this mascara but it’s not the one for me. My favorite mascara I’ve tried so far is Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes.

Have you tried Benefit’s They’re Real mascara? What did you think?

you’ve been stylesyah-ed! xo

    • I was hoping this mascara would work for me too since I heard so much about it. Oh well! Part of the fun of makeup is the experimentation. I haven’t tried Roller Lash…will keep an eye out for it. thanks for stopping by! xo

  1. Great review! I appreciate your honesty. I don’t care for mascara that is hard to remove, clumps, or doesn’t separate my lashes.

When I went to sephora, an employee discourage me to buy this mascara. She told me that people love it but it wasn’t any good. Lol!

My favorite mascara is Diorshow Lash extension effect volume mascara. It’s amazing!
